Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis died while deployed in Afghanistan in 2013. He sacrificed his life, defending the life of a Polish soldier, Karol Cierpica. Since then, the Ollis family has been close to the Polish community, both in the US and in Poland.
On June 8, 2019 in Staten Island, Sergeant Ollis will be posthumously awarded with Distinguished Service Cross. It is one of the highest honors in the US Army, that falls right under the Congressional Medal of Honor
